From the website of Austin, Texas based photographer Jay B. Sauceda:

"Before there was vinyl printing there were big brick walls and craftsmen who covered said walls with their commercial artwork. This is my ever growing collection of those that I find while on the road."

Check out the full collection here. And be sure to look through the rest of his site. Lots of great portraits, too.

Advertising Takeover

The "New York Street Advertising Takeover" took place yesterday, with more than 120 illegal billboards throughout the city being turned into pieces of art. Organized by Jordan Seiler, the event reclaims hundreds of billboards that are not registered with the city, which makes them not only illegal, but intrusive and ugly. The boards were first whitewashed by volunteers and then handed over to artists for a final transformation. Excellent.

Crossbreeding and Crosshatching

Graffiti artist Michael Alan led a double life for almost seventeen years. During the day, he studied anatomy and practiced his figure sketching. At night, he explored graffiti. According to Alan, there was no connection and he felt unsatisfied. Uninterested in pursuing one genre of art over the other, he started integrating his two seemingly inconsistent styles to arrive at a unique hybrid. With a heavy emphasis on his signature crosshatching, Alan's art is dark, surreal, and visually complex. You can check out some of his latest drawings through February 12 at the McCaig-Welles Gallery in Brooklyn.

Instead of using paint, Edina Tokodi creates her street art with patches of eco-friendly moss. Her green pieces, which are meant to be touched, have been popping up around Williamsburg, Brooklyn and in other spots. Read more about it over at Inhabitat.
