Tall Tales Logo

I love this logo for the Tall Tales restaurant concept, which will be located in Gander Mountain retail stores. The first location will be opening soon in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Notice the goose and fish in the antlers? Very cool. More great work from Duffy & Partners.

Firehose

1

So the other night I went looking for a bottle of wine to go along with a spicy Indian dinner. I headed over to the Riesling area and found a bottle of wine speaking directly to my needs. Firehose. I loved the simple design and unique name. Being a sucker for such things, I took a bottle home. And, I must say, it did the job admirably.

I just love the DVD cover and navigation art for this new release from the Criterion Collection. If you haven't seen Guy Maddin's trippy homage to silent films and an imaginary childhood (complete with a resurrected father, a gender bending movie star, and a omnipresent mother in a lighthouse tower), you are missing out. Buy your copy here. Wonderful design work from Jason Hardy.

Ceramic Paper Plates

1

2

To create her reusable ceramic plates, designer Virginia Sin makes paperclay from the pulp of shredded paper plates. Once fired, some of the paper pulp burns out of the clay and the resulting pieces end up almost as light as the real thing. Each piece is then glazed on both sides, making them both microwave and dishwasher safe.

Bach's Regal Logo

Picture_5

Friday is the 323rd anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach's birth. To many, J.S. Bach was to music what Shakespeare was to English literature and Isaac Newton was to physics. Take a moment to listen to some of his timeless music this weekend (much of which, amazingly, was considered a bit old-fashioned in its day). Also, take a moment to admire his beautiful logo. The middle graphic above is the seal he used to mark all of his personal papers and compositions. It contains the letters JSB superimposed over their mirror image, as shown in the bottom graphic. Gorgeous.

The Shortest Day

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, today is the shortest day of the year. Lights will burn extra long. Candles will be lit extra early. Perhaps it's the ideal time to ponder the piece above. Created by the-home-project studio, it was designed to make us question the true value of energy.

Rekindled

I have not been particularly kind to the Kindle. Although I have yet to touch one, I have been fairly outspoken in my distaste for the outward appearance of Amazon's revolutionary e-book reader. I believe I mentioned 1981 in more than one conversation. And maybe Texas Instruments. And perhaps orthopedic shoes. But look at this beautiful packaging (find more shots here). That's not at all what I would have expected. This packaging is very cool. Almost Apple cool. I mean, it's enough to make a guy rethink everything...
